Reviews
As far as Croatian films go, this is by no means a bad production. However, that's a long way off saying that it is a good film. For an hour and a half of entertainment it's perfectly watchable. Given that it was marketed as the first film for which Marko Perkovic Thompson had produced the music (rather than for its content or any of the actors), the music is pleasingly unobtrusive. Given that they didn't have the budget for any epic battle scenes, it's also good that the didn't botch this up, instead favouring small skirmishes for the most part. The chance meeting of the latest incarnation of Tito with Hitler at the film's end is an amusing little touch, and its good that they left it as just this rather than making it a greater focus.
On a less positive note, at times the film is noticeably cheap. Take for example the CGI Austrian aeroplane- I could almost see the individual pixels. Likewise, although it was meant to be set in Poland, some of it was clearly filmed in Zaprešić (a town not far from Zagreb), and whilst this might fool international audiences (I'm not sure how many of these there will realistically be), it wasn't too well planned for the majority of Croatian viewers who know their relatively small country relatively well. Moving on to the actual acting, (an whilst I do not speak Russian) the Croatian actors playing Russian characters sounding somewhat unconvincing, staccato in their pronunciation, as though they were clearly speaking a foreign language. Two reasons exist for this: 1) They probably don't have the best Russian accents, 2) The relatively small cadre of actors in Croatia means that whenever we see someone like Ivo Gregurevic in a film we recognise him instantly due to his personal acting style and the frequency with which he is in domestic productions, meaning that as such he is not the most convincing Cossack.
Although it is about the First World War, it is not overly festooned with depictions of suffering (probably because of the transience of characters in the film) and surprisingly manages to avoid needless presentations of Croats as history's greatest victims (pleasing given Thomspon's participation), and whilst the work is a swipe at Tito (showing him as actually nothing more than a Russian chancer) this is not too visceral. So, all in all, don't watch it with any great expectations and you won't be disappointed.
